The top layer is the Epidermis. In this layer we shed our skin cells. A layer of sebum (oil) keeps it soft and water proof. Different areas of the body have differing depths of the epidermis. For example, the soles of our feet have a thick layer, whereas our eyelids have a thinner layer.
Under that is the Dermis or Dermal layer, the second layer of skin. This is the layer which form the structure of the skin. We have all heard about elastin and collagen as it is mentioned in so many moisturisers and treatments. This is where these fibres are the found. In combination, they give flexibility and strength to this skin. The Dermis also contains nerve endings, sebaceous glands for oil, hair follicles and blood and nerve supplies.
The third and deepest layer is the Subcutaneous layer or HypoDermis. This layer holds a high percentage of adipose tissue or fat cells. This is for cushioning and protection.These fat cells also insulate the body’s surface are. It also has a higher blood and nerve supply.
