The answers to the main ones are below.
What is the difference between Microblading and a Feather Brow?
The answer is simple. MICROBLADING is the TECHNIQUE for developing a FEATHER BROW. A small disposable hand tool is used to generate hair-like strokes. The edge of the tool is dipped in colour perfect pigment and placed between the epidermal and dermal layers ls of your skin. As these strokes mimic your natural hairs the result is a natural looking, fuller and perfectly shaped eyebrows. The secret should be yours to share….
What are the differences between a Powder Brow, Ombre Brows Combination Brows and Nano Hair Strokes?
These are all names given to other methods of eyebrow styles. All methods deliver pigment between the dermis and epidermis.
There are 2 methods used. The Hand Tool which is called a MICROBLADE and The Pen Method which uses a fine needle like a biro.
The MICROBLADE uses a closely packed row of nano pins which forms a ’blade’. This ‘microblade blade’ is dipped into a well of pigment. The microblade etches the pigment into an individual strokes to mimic a hair, rather like a quill and ink. This method is used less now as it is not as suitable for many skin types
2. The machine or pen method is the nearest to the traditional tattoo. A small pen like device, is used to deliver the pigment to a very fine needle. This finely grazes the surface of the skin to evenly distribute the pigment in pixels. It depend on how the pigment is placed into the skin as to what design is created. Therefore, the pen method can create Powder and Ombre Brows (shading), or fine lines which mimic hair strokes. The line method is often referred to as Nano Brows, Hair Strokes, Feather Brows or Machine Strokes.
Shading called Ombre, or with more depth, Powder Brow. This method created continuous layer of colour rather than hair strokes. All require training and an experience in a separate skill level to obtain great results. I have been trained on a FACE to FACE and attended classroom training as there are no formal requirements to to be trained as a Cosmetic Tattoo Artist I have chosen not to be trained through the internet and ZOOM methods.
The Powder Brow is a great option for a contemporary style. It is especially good if you have an oiler skin, perhaps wear more makeup or have lash extensions. It is well suited to more mature clients too. Clients sometimes opt for the Powder Brow if they have tried the Feather Brow and want more definition. Pigments colours are as inter-changeable as the older Microblading technique.
Ombre is a light to dark contrast of the chosen colour using the same pen method. It is my most popular style as it mimics the natural eyebrow features as your brow is mix of colour, shades and tones throughout its shape. I enhance the light to dark contrasts of your chosen colour using the pen method, for a contemporary and natural look. The Ombre Brow gives a natural definition as it blends with the natural contours of your brow. It is suitable for the majority of clients and will last approximately 2 years.
Combination Brow uses hair strokes and shading to add depth and a natural look. As the name suggests it is a combination of hair strokes and shading . Like with all the brow designs, the colour of the pigment is chosen to be the perfect tone for you. It is a popular option as it adds depth of colour as well as hair strokes.
Nano or Hair Strokes. This style has largely replaced the Microblade. It is considered the lightest method of creating an eyebrow tattoo. The digital pen is used to slowly graze the surface of the skin with fine lines which mimic the shape and contour of a hair. This delicate style gives a very soft effect as there are gaps between each stroke so the ‘hairs’ are visible.
How many sessions will I need?
All Cosmetic Tattooing or Semi Permanent Make Up ( SPMU) treatments require at least 2 appointments. The second appointment is generally 6-8 weeks after the initial one. Your skin will go through a healing process. During this time it is essential that you adhere to the after care advice given to you. This will depend on the type of Cosmetic Tattooing procedure you have had.
How long does it last for?
This is a million dollar question as it depends on multiple factors. The skin type you have, activities such as gym and swimming and how effective your cell turn over and healing ability is. Some medications such as Anti-histamines, The Contraceptive Pill can effect the pigment. It is advisable to avoid applying serums or moisturisers containing Vitamin C , Vitamin A, AHA’s and Retinol over the tattooed area. These can speed up the cell renewal. If you have skin peeling or Microdermabrasion facials , please ask the technician or therapist to avoid the Cosmetically Tattoo area as well.
You will need to adhere to the After Care initially and have a follow up appointment 4-6 weeks after your initial procedure to ensure the best outcome.
An annual top up for all Cosmetic Tattooing procedures is highly recommended. This is especially recommended for Eye Brows to keep them looking fantastic. If you have opted for a softer effect initially, then more frequent top ups may be necessary.
Eyeliner sometimes lasts longer up to 3 -4 years.
Does Cosmetic Tattooing hurt?
NO. However, some clients are more sensitive than others.

Clients are able to access specifically compounded, topical anaesthetic from Compounding Pharmacists. The Therapeutics Goods Administration , (TGA) demand that clients’ of Cosmetic Tattoo Artists seek a consultation from a Pharmacist. You are then able to receive the compounded topical anaesthetic which enables a totally pain free experience. There is a link under Terms and Conditions plus I am able to explain this is more detail on a personal phone call.
What happens if I don’t like it?
I can’t speak for other Artists, but I consult you thoroughly before and during the procedure. We discuss what your expectations are, your style and usual make up look. As a life drawing artist I understand colour and form. Your bespoke design will be as individual as you are. As pigment is used and not ink, there is a natural fade so this will occur naturally.
To reassure you, I have genuine client satisfaction reviews across Google and Facebook.
What is the difference between a normal or traditional Ink Tattoo and a Cosmetic Tattoo?
The traditional Tattoo, can be performed all over the body and uses a different technique with guns, pens and airbrushes. Carbon dense ink is used and this remains liquid in the skin. The ink is placed deeper into the skin, the lower dermal or upper subcutaneous layers.
Cosmetic Tattoo is a general term used for face, areola and sculpt micro- pigmentation. It’s less permanent as its uses natural looking pigments. The pigment is placed in the upper layers of the skin between the epidermis and the dermis. It is also known as semi- permanent make-up or SPMU, although this term is rarely used in Australia. I design brow and eyeliner cosmetic tattoos with newer and updated techniques and pigments. This means a more natural and softer finished result which lasts up to 2-3 years.
How do you decide which is the correct colour for me ?
I have been a Life Drawing Artist for over 30 years and my artistic ability helps to understanding skin tone and facial proportions. I am trained in the Fitzpatrick Scale which looks at skin tone, vein colour amongst other factors and have completed the Advanced Colour Course specifically for cosmetic tattooing. I use a variety of brands including Etalon, Hanafy* Tina Davies* Perm-a-blend* range of pigments which are available in a variety of colours. These can be blended to suit any skin tone and are internationally recognised for their retention and natural hues. As no two people are the same, I am able to blend colours to suit your hair and skin tone, perfectly.
Your follow up appointment, 6-8 weeks after your initial appointment, gives me the opportunity to see how the pigments have settled into your skin. It’s at this appointment where we can make minor adjustments if necessary.
What training have I received?
It might surprise (or horrify you!) but there are no formal training requirements to become a Cosmetic Tattoo Artist in Western Australia. Therefore, clients need to vigilant when booking to have this procedure.
I have attended many training sessions beginning in 2019 in Western Australia and the UK. These were by experienced international trainers The training courses I have chosen were primarily face to face, rather than group sessions which gives me the opportunity to continue to update my skills. Clients can rest assure that you are in safe and professional hands.
I qualified with the International Health and Beauty Diploma as a Beauty Therapist many years ago in the UK. My area of expertise was make up and electrolysis. After a few years I transitioned into the corporate Pharmaceutical and Health Industry. I have a deep understanding of human biology, your skin and the science with cosmetic tattooing .
